ABSTRACT

Penile skin conditions can be difficult to diagnose. Lesions can range from simple benign to premalignant and malignant conditions requiring a more specialized approach. Surprisingly, men’s natural tendency to defer self-referral is even more prevalent with penile lesions. Given the easily detectable and visible nature of penile tumors compared with other malignancies, such as prostate cancer, one has to wonder why such delays in seeking help occur. Likely factors include embarrassment, fear, ignorance, and being single. The subsequent late presentation of serious conditions can often render a simple treatable lesion into one requiring a more invasive and dramatic surgical approach.
