ABSTRACT

Keeping fit should be easy, but it isn’t! Sedentary lifestyles, regular use of transportation, good food and drink, plus the increasing demands of a stressful life, have placed fitness on the backburner of many people’s lives. Sport is important for the obvious reasons – it maintains cardiovascular health, strengthens bones and muscles, uses up excess calories, promotes a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation, fosters discipline, and releases tensions and aggression in a controlled manner. There is no better way to bond with one’s peers and form close relationships. However, sport need not be unduly vigorous to be effective, and it can be carried out at any age – a good, brisk walk with a rambling club over 10-20 km is easily achieved into the 70s or even 80s.
