ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The oral cavity is a unique structure that serves a multitude of functions. It is the gateway to the aerodigestive tract and is vital in the production of normal speech. It houses many specific and highly specialized structures: the mandible, the teeth, the tongue, the palate, and the oropharynx. The oral cavity is lined with mucosa, which is lubricated by saliva. This mucosa covers the muscles that provide the motor functions that facilitate speech and swallowing. It is rich in nerve endings, which provide the special sense of taste as well as exquisite sensation.
