ABSTRACT
The infectious process encompasses a highly complex series of events that surround the relationship between the defending host and the offending parasite. Virulence factors available to the microorganism will be combated by a wide range of specific and nonspecific defense mechanisms, and the result of this encounter, “the microbiological battleground,” will determine whether infectious disease is established.
