ABSTRACT

An important role of perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) includes the determination of baseline systolic and diastolic function of the right ventricle (RV) and left ventricle (LV) before a surgical procedure. Changes in ventricular function during cardiac and noncardiac procedures in some cases may lead to severe hemodynamic instability, which is considered a category 1 indication for the use of TEE when unresponsive to therapy (1).
