ABSTRACT

Echocardiography is the method of choice for the noninvasive assessment of the severity and mechanisms of mitral regurgitation (MR). Practice guidelines recently published by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association are largely based on echocardiography evaluation (1). This chapter includes the recent recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) for the evaluation and assessment of the severity of native valvular regurgitation (2), with emphasis on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) examination.
