ABSTRACT

Sensory innervation to the nipple is supplied by the lateral cutaneous branch of the fourth intercostal (T4) nerve. In other words, this is the nerve that communicates sensation and stimulation from the nipple to the brain. In breast reduction surgery, there is a 15% risk that the surgery will either damage the nerve or otherwise impair its ability to communicate with the brain, resulting in a change in nipple sensation ( 1 ).
