Level 1: Criteria for Melanocytic Lesions Search for pigment network (N.B: one major exception; see below) (Fig. 4.3), branched streaks (e.g., atypical network) (Fig. 4.4), streaks (i.e., radial streaming and pseudopods), negative network, aggregated globules (Fig. 4.5), homogenous blue pigmentation (Fig. 4.6), pseudonetwork (face) (Fig. 4.7), or parallel pattern (palms, soles, and mucosa) (Fig. 4.8). If any of these structures or features are present, the lesion is considered of melanocytic origin and hence, one can proceed directly to the second step of the two-step algorithm. In the second step of the algorithm, the presumed melanocytic lesion is evaluated to determine whether it is benign, suspicious, or malignant (Fig. 4.1 and chap. 6).
