ABSTRACT

Although the term was fi rst coined in 1970 (Wurm et al., 2008), doctors have long taken advantage of new and novel forms of communication; Wilhelm Einthoven, inventor of the electrocardiogram (ECG), created the telecardiogram to monitor ECGs from a distance. In the 1950s, closedcircuit TV allowed doctors to conduct interviews with psychiatric patients from a remote location. As 21st century society becomes increasingly interconnected through technical advances, dermatology, perhaps the most visual of medical specialties, is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this fi eld of medicine.
