ABSTRACT

The distal fold contains several major structures: the hyponychium, the distal groove, and the tip of the digit. The hyponychium is the physiologic separation of the plate from its strong adherence to the onychodermal band. The distal groove is a narrow rim of transitional skin as it lacks epidermal ridges. This area is linked to the periosteum of the ungual process by deep connective fibers.
