ABSTRACT
Ultimately, cellular/molecular assays and quantitative structure-activity relationships will likely become routine to supplement (or even eventually replace) the current whole animal developmental toxicity tests. However, progress toward that end requires major increases in our understanding of both the mechanisms of developmental toxicity and the complex interplay of the molecular and physiological systems that govern and regulate developmental processes as well as maternal physiology and homeostasis (cf. chap. 24).
