PATHOGEN Toxoplasma gondii (TG) is an obligate intracellular protozoan (parasite).
INCIDENCE/EPIDEMIOLOGY The incidence of primary acute maternal infection is 0.01% to 0.1% in the United States and United Kingdom. The prevalence of past infection is approximately 10% to 15% in the United States (1), as high as 44% in France/Europe (2), 50% to 70% in Latin American countries, and 5% to 35% in Asia, China, and Korea. Once immune, immunity lasts for life (3).
