ABSTRACT

Prevention Some have advocated routine universal maternal serologic screening for platelet antigens for identifying pregnancies at risk for NAIT, before it happens in the first pregnancy without warnings (3). Screening for HPA-1a alloimmunization detects about two cases in 1000 pregnancies. Severe NAIT occurs in about 31% of these immunized pregnancies, and perinatal ICH in about 10% (perhaps more) of pregnancies with severe NAIT. Therefore, the identification (for possible prevention) of 1 case of ICH would need the screening of about 15,000 pregnancies (4).

l About 25% of NAIT is not caused by the most common antigen.
