Exercise Exercising three times a week for 20 to 45 minutes is probably beneficial for women with GDM. In small RCTs, in women with GDM, exercise (as defined by 30 minutes of non-weightbearing activity at 50% of aerobic capacity) has been associated with similar rate of macrosomia compared to insulin (31), improvement in glycemic control when done with diet compared to diet only (32), and improvement in cardiovascular fitness (33). Overall, there is insufficient evidence (total of 114 women in four RCTs) to definitively prove that exercise programs for women with GDM affect maternal or neonatal outcomes (4).
