ABSTRACT
KEY POINTS l Symptomatic gallstones are common in pregnant
women, but acute cholecystitis is uncommon. l Pregnancy and the postpartum period increase the risk
of gallstones and acute cholecystitis. l Biliary colic is the most common symptom associated
with gallstones. l Acute cholecystitis can be differentiated from biliary
colic based on constant right upper quadrant or epigastric pain, Murphy’s sign and evidence of inflammation with systemic signs.
