ABSTRACT

HISTORICAL NOTES The first cases of what would soon thereafter be called AIDS were reported in homosexual males on June 5, 1981. In 1994, the PACTG-076 regimen of antepartum and intrapartum AZT administered to the mother and then to the newborn for

six weeks resulted in a reduction of maternal-infant transmission of HIV-1 from 25.5% to 8% (1).
