ABSTRACT

Herbal remedies were once popular methods for treating illness and diseases. Well before the advent of modern medicine, people relied on trial-and-error and inappropriate methods for the use of common plants, herbs, fruits, and other extracts found in nature to treat diseases. As science progressed, modern medicine became more common in the developed countries and soon replaced the role of herbal remedies. Herbal medicine, however, has started to regain people’s attention as science looks towards more natural rather than molecularly engineered drugs to help ailing patients. A number of studies also show that herbal medicine exerts health protective effects1-3. With increasing popularity among the public, herbal therapy is currently estimated to be used by 12.1% to 14% of the population in the United States4.
