ABSTRACT

It is often stated that diet and exercise are an important part of prevention and

treatment of excessive weight and obesity. However, most insurance companies

will not pay for people to receive nutrition counseling prior to getting obese and

needing surgery. On the other hand, insurance companies will pay for and, in

fact, insist that an obese patient should have three to six months of nutrition

counseling prior to scheduled gastric bypass surgery. Thus, physicians end up

being the primary source of information on nutrition and diet for their patients.
