ABSTRACT

The Chinese people have long realized and enjoyed geological heritage resources. In their masterpieces throughout the ages, many great poets and writers have lauded China's renowned mountains and great rivers. People can feel that there are paintings in poems and poems in paintings. Some ancient monks, Taoists and travellers had a deep love for the mountains and rivers and for embodying themselves into an integral part of nature. The 5000-year Chinese history is also a history of the exploration and protection of natural resources, and the recognition, exploration and protection of natural resources are being integrated smoothly into the nation's development. In this process the geological heritage has provided a broad material basis for the advance of national culture and, in turn, added credit to the cultural connotation of resources. The harmony of the rich and colourful geological heritage resources together with the long history of Chinese civilization is a major characteristic of China's National Geoparks, and it is also an important factor for China to 141take a leading place in promoting the UNESCO-sponsored Geopark Programme at a national level.
