ABSTRACT

The term geotourism used in this chapter refers to the utilization of geological heritage resources for education-based tourism. The geological heritage resource is based on the intrinsic values of geological and geomorphological features. These intrinsic values may include scientific, aesthetic, recreational and cultural values. The scientific value refers to important geological records or history of the earth (e.g. fossils, rock types and unconformity). It may also be understood in terms of the diversity of minerals, rocks, fossils, structures and landforms. The aesthetic value refers to breathtaking and unusual landscapes (e.g. mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and beaches). The recreational value refers to landscapes that are suitable for various nature recreation (e.g. mountain hiking, rock climbing, white-water rafting and swimming etc.). The cultural value is associated with traditional use, local beliefs, and historic and archaeological records.
