ABSTRACT

In the course of the last thirty years Barcelona has undergone a major process of enhancement affecting both the restructuring of its urban spaces and principal infrastructures and a transformation of its former industry-based economic system. The city was originally founded beside the Mediterranean in a natural geographical position between the coastal mountain system and the sea, framed by two rivers. This is the natural space of the central city of 1.6 million inhabitants, in a metropolitan territory of approximately 4.5 million covering in the region of 1000 km2.
