ABSTRACT

Tourism is a discretionary expenditure; the primary concern of tourists is to travel to destinations that satisfy their desires, while minimising their exposure to threats to their safety (Beirman, 2 003). In recent years, the attractiveness of high-risk, exotic destinations to increasingly global tourists has exposed them to greater levels of risk (Faulkner, 2001). The emergence of “adventure tourism” adds to this exposure (Ewert & Jamieson, 2003). The topic of this chapter is the threat posed to tourists from natural disasters, and how management, both in the short and long term, can reduce this threat.
