ABSTRACT

Risk management is mandatory practice for operators of outdoor adventure tourist activities. In many instances the outdoor adventure tourism operator must demonstrate the ability to manage risk before gaining access to activity settings, qualifying for public liability insurance, and gaining accreditation through recognised industry organisations. Of equal importance to the outdoor adventure tourism operator is the role of risk management in ensuring business viability. This is achieved by providing clients with appropriate and safe outdoor adventure tourism experiences. Later in this chapter, we explain a risk management process that can be used to facilitate safe outdoor adventure tourism activities. Before this, we discuss two topics that underpin the development of this sector of the tourism industry: the factors that have encouraged the growth and scope of outdoor adventure tourist activities; and, the experience provided by outdoor adventure activities.
