ABSTRACT

According to Raban (1992, p. 1), the sea is a significant topic in English literature because “people generally write about things that give them the most difficulty in their lives, and maritime peoples are chronically oppressed and fascinated by the sea”. Humans have a longstanding association with water and the sea. The earliest known depictions of human swimming have been dated at 9000 B.C., and history records swimming as a common recreational activity among many cultures (Freas, 1999).
