ABSTRACT

Around the world the tourism industry is seen as a prospective employer. Growing numbers of trained, educated and competent people are needed to help run the hotels and restaurants, attractions, travel agencies, computer reservation systems, tour operations and transport companies that make up this vibrant industry. Many are needed to conceive, plan and develop the industry (WTO, 1992). In addition, jobs and businesses are also being created in other, “non-tourism” industries and in the public sector and it is imperative that these employees, earning some of their incomes because people travel, also acquire some knowledge and understanding of tourism.
