ABSTRACT

The Lulea archipelago case is interesting because of its peripheral geographical location as well as because there is a general willingness to develop tourism further during both summer and winter. The summer season in the Lulea archipelago is of good quality and to some extent it resembles that of island resorts in warmer climates. Its combination of dry weather, sun, sandy beaches and temperate water is well known in Scandinavia. The Lulea archipelago consists of over 700 islands located in the Gulf of Bothnia. Just adjacent to the archipelago lies the city of Lulea with its 73,000 inhabitants. The harbour is one of the largest in Sweden calculated in terms of tonnage. The idea of the Bothnia Arc project is to connect the offers from Lulea municipality to local or regional people who seek recreation in the frozen archipelago, to the tourists from continental Europe for whom most of these activities are simply not available in their home environments.
