ABSTRACT

Through this chapter, the student will be exposed to:

Appreciate the economic and political devastation that Europe experienced in the aftermath of World War II and realize that this distraction contained the seeds of co-operation between some Western European states

Understand how the EU has evolved through time, from its original Community structure to its present arrangement

Get an idea of the basic institutional design of the EU and the key functions of each of the main institutions

Become familiar with the EU’s policy of enlargement, by looking at successive enlargements over the years

Recognize national/cultural differences across member states of the Union and appreciate the obstacles that these differences impose on free trade

Get an idea of how businesses behave in Europe’s single market and why they tend to behave in this way

Realize how the elimination of barriers in the trading of goods has taken place over time

Measure progress in the field of freeing up the movement of services in the Union and evaluate its significance

Appreciate that (and to what extent) people/workers can move freely in the EU

Assess the impact of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on business behavior

Evaluate the importance of adopting a common competition policy in the EU.
