ABSTRACT

It can sometimes feel awkward or embarrassing to be either photographed or photograph someone at close range. These feelings of awkwardness, embarrassment or even hostility may arise out of the subject’s confusion or misinterpretation over the intent or motive of the photographer. The photographer’s awkwardness or reticence to introduce themselves to the subject often comes from the fear of rejection. Never be tempted to think that a portrait can be created using a telephoto lens with the subject unaware. Although some interesting images of people are captured this way they are not strictly portraits.
