ABSTRACT

Digital images are constructed from square picture elements or ‘pixels’. Increasing the total number of pixels in an image at the scanning or capture stage increases both the quality of the image and its file size. It is ‘resolution’ that determines how large or small the pixels appear in the final printed image. The greater the resolution the smaller the pixels and the greater the apparent sharpness of the image. Resolution is stated in ‘pixels per inch’ or ‘ppi’.
