ABSTRACT

Like sculpture, animation develops complex forms from simple beginnings. Unlike sculpture, finished animation does not simply appear as extraneous material is removed. Animation is like patchwork. A series of small parts is assembled according to a pattern, resulting in a whole “quilt.” Refinement of story, production design, and animation can sometimes continue right up until the completion of the project. A sculpture can be viewed from many different angles. A motion picture’s viewpoint is locked. The director ‘directs’ your attention to specific areas of the frame and the editor sets the viewing time for each shot, exercising total control over the production. Storyboard artists function as a combination of director and editor. They create the blueprint for the remainder of the film.
