ABSTRACT

Heritage attractions and their markets have changed substantially in the recent past and will continue to change in the future. However, as a result of significant social and economic changes, the projected transformation of the heritage industry will probably become even more intensive and conspicuous. This chapter examines the ways in which heritage attractions will need to develop in response to the environmental factors that will likely influence them in the future, as well as the shifting concept of heritage for the coming millennium. The implications of these changes on quality design and development are also illustrated with some examples of successful development cases from Europe.
