ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out to review 20th century tourism research and theories and to consider their relevance, including new directions, for the tourism industry in the 21st century. The chapter is mostly concerned with the latter, directions for the future, and it comes in the form of five observations about tourism research, together with a series of lessons for research doers, or producers, and research users, or consumers, which correspond with these five observations. But before these observations and lessons for the 21st century, I provide a brief overview of the growth of research in tourism.
