Interpretation and attractions book
Introduction Interpretation is an essential component of visitor experiences at visitor attractions. Many of the activities and services provided at visitor attractions, such as guided tours, information signs, self-guided walks and guide books, are forms of interpretation. Interpretation plays two critical roles in visitor attractions: it helps in the creation of visitor experiences and it is a valuable tool in supporting the sustainability of the attraction. This chapter will define interpretation and discuss these two roles in more detail. A model for designing effective interpretation will then be presented. The chapter will also examine a number of challenges for interpretation in visitor attractions, including the need to find ways to present places and topics related to the darker side of human history and nature.
