ABSTRACT

This picture was created in honor of the Dutch still-life painter, Pieter Claesz (1596/97–1660), who, in my eyes, was the greatest of all the Dutch still-life painters. My goal was to recreate the particularly special atmosphere that shines through his pictures with the use of modern technology – peace and beauty in a little place, of simple means, where the eye can relax and the mind can meditate over the forms, lighting and details. I think this notion has proven itself to be a consistent ideal which hasn’t changed among artists over the past four centuries. I didn’t wish to simply recreate an already existent Claesz picture in 3D, not even out of simple respect. Instead, I aimed at creating a still-life with a new composition using elements of the Master’s work as reference. The legendary objects which Claesz created in his works were a great challenge and inspiration for me in this piece.
