A spa was the best place for a rich widower to fi nd a young wife from a good family or for a rich young widow to fi nd a new, perhaps aristocratic match. Several marriages rooted in a ‘ cure stay ’ and in German even a special word has been invented for a gentleman who found the lady of his choice in a spa resort: Kurschatten, meaning ‘ the spa-shadow. ’
