After reading this chapter, you should be able to:
Gain a general understanding of tourism as a distinctive social and economic phenomenon;
Understand the key tourism concepts such as tourism as a social phenomenon, tourism as an industry or collections of industries, tourism product, tourism forms, tourism development and planning, and tourism entrepreneurship;
Expand the theoretical understanding of different phases of tourism development and growth since the end of the Second World War; and
Understand the characteristics of entrepreneurship research in the field of tourism and identify entrepreneurship research progress and potential for tourism scholars.
