ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance for sports facilities' technical design whether they are used for competition, training or recreation. The guidance is set out starting with the key dimensional data of the field of play for each sport, followed by principles to be applied to the design of viewing structures, and lastly the accommodation for the various users of the facility. All sports are conducted on a field of play, whether that is a pitch, track, course, pool, field or court. When planning indoor facilities, the designer must take into account the height of the performance space required for each sport. Sports are played on a vast array of different surfaces from simple sand, for beach volleyball and petanque, through turf of varying complexity to quite sophisticated sprung timber floors for indoor courts. If the sport is to be played outside at night then clearly floodlight will be required so that the participants can play and train in safety.
