ABSTRACT

Universities are places of learning and research in a variety of subjects at the highest level and are often, therefore, described as being institutes within the Higher Education sector. The UK higher education system is becoming increasingly diverse. This diversity is expressed in the use of space, particularly between teaching-led and research-led universities. Modern universities vary hugely, having differing emphases on subjects and research. Their locations and student base are also diverse. Many universities evolved into college-based institutes, the earliest include Paris, Oxford, Cambridge and later, Durham. Music is studied at a department/school within a university faculty of performing arts, or at a specialist college, academy or conservatoire. Music spaces are for creating and listening to sound and therefore an appropriate acoustic environment is essential. Most music department/schools host a range of activities and events including performances outside the normal teaching day.
