ABSTRACT
Ecuador is located in western South America, bordering the Pacific Ocean at the Equator, between Colombia and Peru. Its terrain is divided into coastal plain (costa), inter-Andean central highlands (sierra), and flat to rolling eastern jungle (oriente). Ecuador has 14.7 Mio inhabitants, and almost two thirds of the rural population are considered poor.
