ABSTRACT

YO U M A Y H A V E N O T E D that at times your instructor has disagreed withportions of the textbook. Such disagreements are normal and remind you that no matter how skilled the authors or how comprehensive the coverage in the textbook, there are many other ways the authors could have told their story than the way they chose. The authors know that many subjects in American history are controversial and that historians may not agree about what happened or why it happened. When your professor and your textbook differ, they merely reflect larger differences of opinion within the community of scholars.
