ABSTRACT

In reading these case studies, we are looking at a snapshot across the developed world of pilots and trials that have taken place over the years from 2000 to 2004. These case studies, along with other work in schools, corporations, universities and colleges, suggest that mobile learning is emerging – perhaps unsteadily – from an early phase of technological innovation and subject-specific delivery. It is now approaching a critical phase in its development when its advocates must address the twin issues of ‘blending’ with other forms of delivery, both traditional and electronic, and of devising sustainable, reliable, generalized and large-scale formats across whole departments and institutions. We return to these latter issues in Chapter 19.
