ABSTRACT

Many of the essays in this book revolve around liberal values and liberal aims for education. In a world increasingly attracted towards liberal-democratic ideas, at least as a political ideal if not always fully realised in practice, this is to be welcomed. Yet liberal thinking has many variants. Some of these seem to me to be more in harmony with core liberal values than others. In this chapter I would like to explore this last thought, with a view to uncovering a defensible version of liberalism which can serve as a basis for educational planning.
