ABSTRACT
One of the major benefits of studying aspects of music education in a country different from our own is that it helps us to reflect on, and better understand, our own music education provision. It may be that one wishes to address a particular problem in one's own system of music education by looking at other approaches. Such study could lead eventually to possible recommendations for the teaching and learning of music or changes in policy. Comparative music education as a field of study is also valuable in its own right, contributing, through discussion of common issues, to greater international understanding in music education.
