ABSTRACT

The campaign in Afghanistan from the autumn of 2001 through the winter of 2002 and the war in Iraq to unseat Saddam Hussein's regime have given the world a glimpse into the capabilities of a US military that has undergone significant transformation in the decade since the Persian Gulf War of 1990–91. The US military has increased its ability to leverage information technologies to improve battlefield performance. GPS-guided precision munitions enable the US to target fixed positions at night and in poor weather. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) greatly enhance reconnaissance capabilities. Space assets assist in position location, precision attack, communications and data transfer. Information warfare operations have also become an important part of the repertoire of combatants in the information age.1
