Most people who attended university before the 1970s will have experienced the inloco parentis approach to university life: e.g. locked residences after 1 1 o'clock, and other examples of the university controlling the activities of the student. This kind of authority is, of course, completely out of fashion now. What is ‘in fashion’ now, is student support.
