ABSTRACT

The skills presented here are drawn from developmental counselling and therapy (DCT), an alternative model of helping that integrates traditional counselling theories and approaches, and presents new concepts for effective interviewing and counselling practice. Further information on DCT as a model of helping, and as a comprehensive framework for organising the multitude of theories and approaches at our disposal, can be found in the writings of Ivey (1987, 1993, 2000); Ivey and Gonçalves (1988); Ivey et al. (1989); Rigazio-DiGilio and Ivey (1991, 1993); RigazioDiGilio (1994a); Rigazio-DiGilio and Ivey (1995); Ivey and Ivey (2003); Ivey, Ivey, Myers, and Sweeney (2005). What we focus upon in this chapter are the basic developmental skills, which can be effectively integrated into practice whether in the helping field, the business field, or a service-related occupation.
