ABSTRACT

Structured tinkering is a systematic approach to the modification of the basic school curriculum to meet the needs of gifted and talented pupils. The approach builds on curriculum planning techniques and classroom differentiation techniques, and encourages individual teachers to determine the areas and methodologies for curriculum improvement. It foregrounds the role of the teacher and provides them with the skills to engage in critical reflection and systematic data collection so as to make informed choices on behalf of their class or department. This chapter explores the rationale for the development of such an approach, gives details of its methodology and highlights some of its outcomes.
