In a culture of accountability and liability, teachers, along with other professionals, are increasingly at risk of facing litigation when things go wrong (Raymond, 1999). The fact that all physical activity contains inherent risks, and that physical education has unique risks in relation to other subjects in the National Curriculum, demands that you have specialist knowledge and understanding to ensure that all practice is safe. It is essential that you stay up to date in light of the regularity with which issues and advice relating to safety and safe practice evolve and develop.
