ABSTRACT
The discussion of ethical issues in mental health has been conducted almost entirely by people on the powerful side of the divide in the psychiatric system. The voices of the recipients of the services of psychiatrists and their predecessors, the mad doctors and Poor Law administrators, have seldom been heard.
