ABSTRACT

Fred practices social therapy in New York City, in the 10,000-square-foot loft space that is the physical and spiritual center of a unique community building project. Over the last 25 years, the project has invited and supported thousands of people to participate in creating a new culture of human development. The loft space houses cultural and psychology-education projects that, while functionally distinct from each other, share in the continued process of creating the social therapeutic approach —that is, they are developmental, therapeutic, philosophical, and performatory (Newman & Holzman, 1996, pp. 151—161). It is an informal, open environment in which therapy, theater, and teaching activities intermingle.
